Membership

The Library aims to support the education, training and research needs of all health care staff eligible to use its services.  These include:

  • all staff of the London North West Healthcare NHS Trust
  • all staff of the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust
  • all health care personnel of the areas served by NHS Brent, Ealing, and Harrow CCGs (General Practitioners, Dentists, Practice Staff, CCG staff, etc.)
  • qualified Social Workers working in the above Trusts and the Borough Councils of Brent, Ealing, and Harrow

Full library membership is available to all the above, on completion of the library registration form and production of your staff ID.

Student library membership is available to health care students for the period the student is on placement in the Hospital. Some form of identification, such as your Student ID card, must be shown on registration. We may also ask for printed proof of your current address or a letter from your placement supervisor.

People not eligible for membership in the above categories may use the library for reference, on appplication to the Librarian.

Collections

The Library houses books and journals covering most health-related subjects including medicine, primary health care, nursing, allied health, health care management, psychology and psychiatry. Most of the items in the collection may be borrowed. Overnight Loan items may be borrowed by Full members for 1 day only, or over the weekend if borrowed on Friday. Reference books and the latest journal issues are the only items that may not be borrowed. To check if the item you need is available, please search the Library Catalogues. The Library also provides access to a growing collection of electronic books and journals, accessible using an NHS OpenAthens login.

Suggestions for additions to the stock are welcome.

Borrowing

Full members: Up to 4 books may be borrowed for 3 weeks. Additionally, up to 3 issues of print journals may be borrowed for 1 week (but not the latest issue).
Student members: Up to 4 books may be borrowed for 1 week.

Renewing Loans

Books and journals on loan may be renewed twice. To renew a loan, please phone, email, or speak directly to a member of library staff. Reserved items cannot be renewed, however, and should be returned promptly.

Returning Loans

Please return all items promptly to staff at the Library Enquiry Desk. When the library is closed, please drop the items into the Book Returns box located just outside the Library main entrance.

Services

Photocopying

There is a black & white photocopier in the library, operated using photocopy cards. The cards can be purchased at the Library Enquiry Desk and will also work in the John Squire Library photocopiers at Northwick Park Hospital. Please keep your copying legal. Specific copyright guidance can be found in the current NHS CLA Licence.

Inter-Library Loans

This service is for Full members only. Items not available in our print or electronic collection can usually be obtained from other libraries within a week. Please fill in an inter-library request form for each item required and bring it to the Library with your payment. There is a small advance charge for each book or article you request. The inter-library request form is available in the library or for download here. A signature is required for each photocopy request. Inter-library photocopy requests are subject to the same copyright rules as specified above in the NHS CLA Licence

Computers and the Internet

Access to the computers and the internet within the Library is available for work or coursework-related use. There are 11 computers available with access to the intranet and internet (filtered through NHSNet), Microsoft Office, and networked printing available in black & white or colour. There is one additional standalone computer with a black & white printer attached. This computer is for editing and printing documents stored on unencrypted flash drives (normally blocked on Trust networked computers for information security reasons). Any print-outs can be collected and paid for at the Library Enquiry Desk.

All computers require a NWLH Trust login, supplied by the ICT department based at Northwick Park Hospital. If you are not eligible for a NWLH login, Library staff may only log in registered library members with valid identification. Please adhere to Trust computer use policies.

Electronic Resources

Freely available to all NHS staff, providing access over the Internet to major health care databases, full-text journals, electronic books, and various learning resources. Self-register online at https://openathens.nice.org.uk/ for an OpenAthens login. Once registered, login on any computer connected to the internet at www.hilo.nhs.uk or www.library.nhs.uk and begin exploring the multitude of electronic resources now available to you.

One-to-one search training on the main databases can be arranged for a mutually convenient time in the Library. Training sessions usually last an hour.

Literature Searches

Provided the search is not for student coursework, we can either carry out a literature search for you, or guide you through a search using MEDLINE, CINAHL, or any of the other health care databases accessible via the NHS OpenAthens login. Literature searches can take a while to complete, so this service is dependent on staff availability and how busy we are at the time of request.

Telephones

Whilst working or studying in the Library, you may answer your bleep from the telephone beside Library Computer 1 near the Library entrance. To keep noise levels to a minimum, please take mobile calls outside.
